10 Winter Activities to Enjoy in Reno and Lake Tahoe

Whether you’re a native of the Battle Born state or have just moved here, Reno and Lake Tahoe are full of exciting activities of all types. Here are 10 winter activities our employees identified as some of their favorites.

1. Riverwalk District

The Riverwalk District is a group of restaurants and galleries located along the Truckee River. You’ll find it between Arlington Avenue and Lake Street. Local merchants sponsor a Wine Walk once a month. Riverwalk is a great place to get a feel for Reno restaurants and nightlife.

2. National Automobile Museum

Bill Harrah was an early casino owner — but his passion was collecting automobiles. You’ll find them all now at the National Automobile Museum in Reno, a collection of more than 200 vehicles from the early days of the horseless carriage to flashy celebrity cars.

3. Nevada Museum of Art

The Nevada Art Museum has been around since 1931, but was vastly expanded and renovated in 2001. You’ll find it towards the southern end of Riverwalk. Its architecture is said to be inspired by the Black Rock Desert. The museum has several world-class collections of photography and more. It’s a great place to hang and get a bite to eat on a weekend.

4. Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a trip unto itself. It’s 40 miles away from Reno, with strikingly blue, clear water, soaring firs, and majestic mountains. There are many things to do in Lake Tahoe, including skiing at Squaw Valley and enjoying the lake at Emerald Bay State Park. (You’ll have to drive to the California side — but that’s a great way to take in Tahoe as well.)

5. Northstar California Tubing Hill

If skiing or snowboarding isn’t up your alley, give snow tubing a try this winter! Located just north of Lake Tahoe, Northstar offers a family-friendly option for everyone to enjoy. Take the tow lift to the top, and ride down the 200-yard hill solo or connected in a daisy chain with your whole group.

6. Mount Rose Ski Resort

If you're a skier in the Reno area, you’re in luck. Mount Rose is closer, at 20 miles from town, and the tallest base resort, measuring 8,260 feet. Ski conditions are often great. You can’t beat proximity and powder.

7. Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum

The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum is a science center that’s fun for the whole family. It’s 67,000 square feet provide multiple interactive exhibits and galleries exploring technology, science, engineering, and more. A jungle gym three stories high presents information about the Nevada water cycle, and the Discovery also contains a replica of the Truckee River with explanations about its natural habitat.

8. Nevada Wolf Pack

Like sports? Then you’ll want to get up close and personal with the University of Nevada, Reno team, known as the Nevada Wolf Pack. They are in Division I football and play in the Mountain West Conference. Cheering them on every weekend will help you connect with the community.

9. Snowshoeing to Chickadee Ridge

Another winter favorite in Lake Tahoe takes you on a thrilling snowshoe expedition to Chickadee Ridge! From the south side of Tahoe Meadows, you can make your way to the summit and enjoy the view from the peak looking out across Lake Tahoe.

10. Sleigh Rides at Lake Tahoe

If you go to Lake Tahoe before snow is on the ground, it’s worth a trip back. First of all, the sleigh rides can’t be beat as a unique winter activity. Rinks can be found at South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex, Heavenly Village and more.
